This is Harry my old dog, taken in August 2004 at Pendine Sands, a seven mile stretch of beach on the shores of Camarthan Bay, South Wales.

With the peace and quiet on such a beautiful day, it was hard to believe that between 1924 and 1927 Pendine Sands was used for several attempts at the land speed record.

Malcolm Campbell being the first, achieved a record of 146mph on September 25th 1924 in his car Blue Bird.

On 28 April 1926 J.G. Parry-Thomas raised the record to over 170 mph, a record that stood for almost a year.

J.G. Parry-Thomas was killed on 3rd March 1927 in his car Babs while trying to regain his title that Malcolm Campbell had taken just weeks earlier with a speed of 174mph.

  1. Wow that’s quite a horizon 🙂

    • Thanks for visiting and taking time to comment Khana 🙂
Yes, it was a stunning horizon and definitely helped by good weather.

  2. Great photo. Looks like a lonely place with just your dog. He must have been so relaxed.

    • Thank you Yvonne 🙂
I’ve only visited once, and I couldn’t have wished for better weather.
I understand it is owned by the Ministry of Defence, and there is often restricted access, with the lack of folk on such a beautiful day, I’m beginning to wonder if I missed the red restriction flags that day 😳

  5. Harry seems to be enjoying your beautiful sky LOL! Lovely shot

    • Thank you Tina 🙂 LOL, yes, he looks like he’s sunbathing, he was actually doing a ‘happy roll’ which I managed to capture mid roll

  6. Fantastic shot – love that it is of Harry – but the lines, composition and the landscape make it stunning 🙂

    • Thank you ED 🙂 It was just one of those fluke moments when everything lined up. If I wanted to be really picky, I’d have preferred Harry to be slightly to the right so he was aligned with the vapour trails in the sky, but I was still very happy with the result.
